8th Anniversary & Blue's Smokehouse, Twickenham

Blue's Smokehouse, Twickenham - American-style BBQ served in a casual atmosphere and where Mr Jones and I chose to celebrate our 8th anniversary!

So me and Mr Jones have been a couple for 8 years.  It feels like both a long and short time...I feel as if he's been a part of my life forever but out of my life so far, 8 years doesn't look like a lot on paper.  Or internet/laptop screen.  I love him to bits and am really excited that hopefully soon we'll be able start planning our wedding so that he can make an honest woman of me!

Before I start getting all gushy, let me tell you about how we celebrated our anniversary.  It involved some of our favourite things - charity shop book hunting, pubs and meat.  That's just how we roll.

First stop - The Eel Pie pub!

Eel Pie Pub, Twickenham

Eel Pie?  I know, weird name.  Eel Pie Island is just around the corner - in the 1800s the eel pies served from what was originally known as Twickenham Ait became so popular that the whole place was renamed to "Eel Pie Island".  Then a load of people had a great time in the 20s/30s with jazz and all that and then again in the 60s when rock and roll made its way to Twickenham!

If you visit Eel Pie pub in Twickenham, keep an eye out for the Calvin & Hobbes comic strips on the way to the toilets!

Anyhow, history lesson over and into the pub!  Naturally the first stop was the bar but Mr Jones was keen to show me something else....they have our beloved Calvin and Hobbes comic strips on the walls on the way to the loos!  We had a quick read of these then finished our pints to head on to the many charity shops that awaited us!

We did do a lot of charity shop book shopping and by the time we reached one end of the high street we felt we needed a restorative drink in the Three Kings.  The pub was, well, pub-ish.  The "beer garden" was great!  I love how they had a sideboard to hold any supplies needed for outside dining but thought the table was wonderful!  I did feel a bit like it was a Sunday at a grandparent's house and that a full roast dinner would be out soon...

Here we are!  Finally!  Our main destination for the day - Blue's Smokehouse!  Our goal was to eat huge quantities of meat.  I can say that our mission was pretty much accomplished (lots of pics ahead!)

Blue's Smokehouse, Twickenham - I really liked that instead of the usual sauces they had their own mustard, ketchup and cherry bourbon sauces

I really liked that instead of the usual branded sauces they had their own mustard, ketchup and cherry bourbon sauces (and I am a sucker for the squeeze bottles!)

Mr Jones and I have a "£10 burger rule" - we strongly believe that you can get the burger of your dreams for a tenner or less and yay - Blue's Smokehouse just squeezes in under £10 with their "Blue's Smokehouse Burger".

Blue's Smokehouse, Twickenham - cider is my drink of choice and this Blind Pig Whiskey and Honey Apple cider is one of the best I've tasted!

After perusing the menu for a bit our drinks arrived...cider is my drink of choice and this Blind Pig Whiskey and Honey Apple cider is one of the best I've tasted!  I didn't really get much of the whiskey taste from it (thank goodness - I hate whiskey!) but could definitely taste the honey.  It was just stunning!

Also, I'm a sucker for great packaging...the bottle came wrapped in a newspaper and when I took a closer look, it was all based on the prohibition, speakeasies and random ads from that time.  Be the "life of the party" with Play a Saw, anyone?!

Blue's Smokehouse, Twickenham - American-style BBQ served in a casual atmosphere and where Mr Jones and I chose to celebrate our 8th anniversary! Burgers, french fries, steak and an onion bundle

Blue's Smokehouse, Twickenham - Onion bundle - if onion rings and onion bhajis had a baby (excluding the spice) it might look just like this...

Blue's Smokehouse, Twickenham - Kickin' Wings - dusted in spices deep-fried until crispy and sauced with your choice of Spicy or Fiery

Then the food came...We ordered a fair bit and asked for it to just all come out at the same time.  For him: steak and chips with extra "onion bundle".  For me: chicken wings and a burger with cheese.  The time between ordering and actually getting stuck in was pretty quick (15, 20 minutes?) - we were one of the only tables there though so imagine if the place was packed it might take a little longer.

One thing we did spot on the menu was the Man v Food style platter, "The Challenge" - ribs, pulled pork, chicken, brisket, burnt ends and sausages...a certain special someone has a birthday coming up - do you think he might like the challenge as a pressie?

With bellies fit to burst we made a final stop at the Barmy Arms for a final pint and a review of our purchases.  Can you tell we like a good book?!

  1. I love looking through the shelves of a good charity bookstore - so many random gems! Also like your £10 burger rule... it's amazing how pricey they can get when at the end of the day, it's still some meat jammed between two halves of a bun! Looks like you had a wonderful day - happy 8 years!
