Pig's Ears, Richmond

Pig's Ears in Richmond offers a huge variety beers from independent breweries, craft beers and not to mention the finest ribs I've tasted in a long time. Read on for my review!

After a day on our feet wandering around the Tower of London we were famished.  We were going to go to a place near Waterloo but it was all booked up.  Then we decided to stop off in Richmond on the way home to a restaurant we've wanted to go to for a while but they were fully booked too!  Sigh.  I then remembered a little place I'd noticed the last time we were in Richmond so we had a wander and with fingers crossed hoped they would be able to serve us food.  Blink and you'll miss it, Pig's Ears is down a little stairway below street level but next time you're in Richmond make sure you keep an eye out...

Once you go down the tight stairs you enter the bar area which if I was an estate agent I would describe it as "cosy", "intimate" or perhaps "bijou" - it's not the largest bar area I've been in but think that adds to the character!  As soon as we walked in I loved the atmosphere - lots of things on the walls, beer paraphernalia dotted about and their brilliant "reasons to love Pig's Ears" posters...

Keep walking through the bar and down some more stairs (bye bye phone reception but I'm totally fine with that!) and you come to the dining area which is again quite small so we were surprised when we asked if they had a table free for us two hungry travellers and they did!

First things first - drinks!  Beer is a massive part of this place - the beer menu was huge (bigger than the food menu, in fact) with beers from independent breweries and craft beers making up most of the choice but also wines, spirits and (luckily for me the non-beer lover) a few ciders.  I went for the Garden Cider Co. dry cider which took me right back to some of the West Country ciders I've had before - not very fizzy, quite tart and perfectly refreshing!

We decided to go the whole hog and order three courses.  I ordered the Baby Back Pig Ribs with a BBQ and cider sauce.  I'm pretty picky about ribs.  I got utterly spoilt back in the day when I worked in a Thai restaurant because they made the most amazing ribs.  You know the sort - zero gristle, perfect sauce and so tender that when you take a bite all of the meat just falls off the bone...yeah...so I've finally found somewhere that meets my expectations.  I would easily go back just to eat several portions of these.

There were loads of delicious sounding stone baked pizzas on the menu and then sandwiches, steaks and burgers...guess what I went for.  Yup.  Burger.  It just snuck in under our £10 burger rule at £9.95 and oh no - brioche bun...BUT the burger was really tasty - juicy, lovely smokey grilled flavour and the fries were perfectly cooked so was happy to ignore the bun situation.

So after the ribs and burger I was stuffed but hey, I committed to the whole three courses and I'm no quitter so went for the brownie with ice cream for desert.  I really love a warm brownie with cold ice cream - I think the temperature difference really makes it fantastic and who doesn't like a gooey brownie?!  The crushed nuts added a lovely crunch to eat bite and I may have dipped my finger in the sprinkled icing sugar a few times...

I also want to add that the service we received was absolutely brilliant.  It was a Friday night, they were busy but the food came out in just the right amount of time, there was always a waiter/waitress around if we needed anything (without being too "in your face") and everyone was so friendly and nice!

The food menu was small but it covered pretty much all my favourite foods and I think a trip back to Pig's Ears is called for VERY soon, purely for the ribs!
